The Next Thing

I'm wrapping up the last 4 classes of boot camp.  I have mixed emotions about it.

I'm pretty ready for it to be over in many regards.  The number one being the hours.  It doesn't start til 7:30, so I don't usually get home until 9 or later 3 nights a week.  I'm not a big fan of that.  Everybody knows what a homebody I am.  Also not a fan of the fear and dread that leads up to many of the classes.  And don't even get me started on how much I'm not a fan of the Paleo diet thing.  Sheesh.

But, I really do like the idea of doing some kind of formatted work-out in a class because it has forced me to go and participate.  I never was a fan of the exercise classes before, but mostly because I am always, always, ALWAYS out of sync and feel like a moron.  But since I feel like a moron much of the time, I'm trying to just embrace that and focus on the fact that at least I will be a thinner, healthier moron.  ;)

Here are some of the things I'm considering as next options, in no particular order.

1.  Yoga - this link is for a hot yoga studio which is nearby and running a special right now for 10 classes.  While I've always wanted to try yoga, I'm a little nervous about being a first-timer at it with the hot twist.  So, not sure.  The special is $29 for 10 classes though, so it's pretty enticing.

2.  Strippercize - Many of you know that I did this years ago with some friends.  Studio Rio was much smaller then and offered an intro class on a "routine."  It was a pretty good workout and definitely helped in the sparks department, if you know what I mean.  They offer pole classes (yes, you read that right and yes, it is that kind of pole) and then other workout classes with a sexy twist.  One of my friends' daughters is a member and adores it.  The least expensive option here is going to be about $120 for 10 classes.  After that, just like a gym, there are varying degrees of commitment.

3.  Cross Fit - the boot camp is done with cross fit techniques but a lot more yelling.  At the compound, you go in for prescribed session times and do the workout of the day (WOD) which someone is there to coach you through if needed.  This price is going to vary depending on the level of commitment.  The longer you sign up, the cheaper the price.

4.  Either going back to my gym or joining another gym.  I've been thinking a lot about joining the YMCA again.  They offer all kinds of classes, plus all of the benefits of a traditional gym.  Plus, unlike my current gym they have a pool so I can go back to my original plan of learning how to swim and t hen swimming as a form of exercise.  This is the plan that I tend to lean the most towards.  One of the things that I keeps me dragging my feet is the quitting my old gym and all of the ordeal that's going to go along with that.  I'm not sure how much of a hassle it is going to be and really don't want to deal with it.  But, frankly, it's just not a great fit for me anymore.  The biggest downside of joining the Y is that if I wanted to go back to doing an early morning workout it would involve a lot more commitment because it isn't close enough to my house to run back and forth -- I'd have to get ready there.  Which means I would probably go after work rather than before, thus getting back to my complaint about taking time away from just being at home...

These are my top 4 options currently.  I'm still a bit on the fence with what to do, but I am really afraid to lose the momentum when boot camp is over.

Whatever the next exercise thing is, my plan has been to couple that with a return to Weight Watchers.  While my lack of running skill will likely be the death of my dream to try a tri before I'm 40, I would still like to get down to a minimum of my last WW total, which is about 30 pounds less than where I am now.  I have more to go than that to be considered in a healthy range, but as a jumping off point I'd like to get back there and then maintain for a while.

That's all for now...  Gotta go work up the nerve to go to boot camp tonight.

hugs,

Heather

Sorry about the delay...  Hope you managed to survive.  :)

The reason for no immediate post is we had to stay late and review our food journal.  I believe that the pile my journal was in was compared to "cockroaches."  Whatever.  Am I strictly paleo?  Nope.  But I am eating way fewer carbs and processed food than I ever did before.  I totally threw down on Saturday, because it was Sertoma and that's our annual favorite drunk fest.  I really did eat like a cockroach, in fact I partied so much I may have eaten a cockroach -- who knows?  Further, who cares?  Good times!

I know that I could not be doing this much of the attempt at diet if it were not for BFF Tina.  As I've mentioned, she's staying with us temporarily and has been in charge of food prep.  It's been a huge help and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to let her move out.  :(  Having said that, there are lots of the diet that I like.  I do like the challenge of figuring out what to eat.  I like that I'm eating lots of fresh food and eating much less salt.  It's just the time that it takes to fix this food all the time is crazy.  I'm not sure how successful I would be sticking to it long term.  Especially since my husband, God love him, does not really like a lot of vegetables and would definitely not be excited about eating some of the same things repeatedly.

The workout on Monday was a fair amount of running.  We ran around the building twice.  Right after that we had to all get into a simultaneous squat and we weren't started until everyone was in sync.  Needless to say that was a bit of a time lag since people kept popping back up.  (Ahem, sorry guys...) Then there was some running in and out of a ladder, running up and down and tapping a thing on the ground, jumping over hurdles and everyone's favorite the bear crawl.  Inside activities including learning to dead lift, a few rounds of wall ball and push-ups.

One of my co-workers said something along the lines that I have a glowy way of talking about the boot camp.  And, I guess I do.  I am not good at the workouts.  I am not fast, efficient, strong, anything.  But every night that I give them the hour and quarter is an hour and quarter that I'm not just sitting around not changing my life.  I like that.  Sometimes when I'm praying for death in the workouts, I try to remind myself of this.  Not as easy to remember then.  But afterwards, I just feel good that I accomplished it.

BFF and I have talked about what we're going to do next.  How we're going to keep up the momentum?  I'm not sure.  I really like the taking classes, but I do hate being out 3 nights a week and away from my husband.  (Although perhaps he likes the peace?  Who knows??)  It's just that being out til after 9 and then having to come home and put together a day's worth of food for the next day and then getting up at dawn and starting again gets to be a bit taxing.  As I frequently say, I have no idea how people with children do all the things they do.  I can barely keep my own shit together.

Anyways, the hour grows close to the work out and I must go get sucked into my lycra and sports bra.  I will probably do a belated bootcamp post for tonight so in the meantime, try a paleo blog!  :)

A Complex Love

Well.  It finally happened.

I miss working out.

So, here's an update since my last real post 13 days ago.  Last Tuesday, my former boss asked me if I wanted to deploy for CAT assistance (more on what this means) the next day.  Since I had already volunteered to be on the "go" list, I said yes.  The day before, I had completed two work-outs and had aggravated a weird strain in what my grandma used to call your "giddy-up" -- this is the tendon area between your groin and thigh.  I decided to skip my Tuesday morning workout because I was still sore and I figured  I would just go after work.  WRONG!  After work, I was then relegated to running around packing and trying to decide what to bring for an indefinite period of time for CAT duty.

CAT duty means catastrophe duty.  When something catastrophic happens (like the tornadoes that have hit so many parts of the country), insurance companies deploy adjusters to assist in adjusting claims.  It's a very stressful time because you don't know the area, you don't know the situation and you are meeting people after they have been through some of the worst disasters that have ever happened to them.  You're on the road a lot and when you're not, you're in your hotel room working on estimates and calling customers.

Needless to say, it is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle.  Especially if your hotel does not have a gym.

Which mine does not.  Now, people who are truly dedicated to the lifestyle would have found a way.  But, I'm just not a big go outside and find a path to walk/run in an unfamiliar area.  On a side of town that I'm not convinced is the "good" side.  Off of a main 50 mph road.  So, no -- I'm not that dedicated.  I did recently decide that I could just walk/run circles around the hotel, because how is that different than doing it around a track?  But, I just figured that out today and I just didn't get very far in that process.

So, I miss working out.  A lot.  So much so that I came up with the crazy idea that the goal I really want to work towards is being able to do a triathlon.  I told Scott this and he mocked me -- because I can't even swim.  That's why it's a goal you work towards -- like a Masters degree.  It takes time to get to, but if I can work towards being able to accomplish it then imagine what good shape I'd be in.

Anyways, as much as I dreaded the gym for various reasons -- I miss the tedium of the elliptical and the dreadmill.  They gave me confidence in myself and confidence that I was working towards a healthier lifestyle.  I'm trying to be good here, but it's impossible at night when we get together because it's drinking friendly.

The CAT is excellent experience for me and the direction that I want my career to go, but I hope I can get back home to my routine and my cardio soon!

Quick check-in

I head back to work tomorrow after a week of staycation. Being home from work definitely made it easier to stick to a meal plan of a sorts and helped me stay on track with working out. I'm hoping this momentum will carry into next week.

I'm feeling pretty good about my progress and my mindset right now. The Lees have declared the weekend nights to be a bit of a blow your diet time, but even then I tried to stay somewhat in line. (Other than the 97 drinks I had last night, I mean! :) ) I'm looking forward to the cardio, kind of. I'm looking forward to being able to tolerate it, really. Well, by tolerate what I mean is able to do it and not feel like I'm going to die. Or puke. Or something. And I think I'm slowly getting in that direction, which is so great. The workout yesterday was tough, but I don't feel awful today and really just generally feeling proud of myself for making it through.

This weeks challenges will be getting up in time to workout before work and staying on track with eating. We made this really funny breakfast casserole that didn't turn out quite like the picture in the recipe. I can't wait to try it -- I'll have to post a photo.

Short and sweet -- hugs,
me
